ISO 9001 certified since 2004, the General Purchasing and Logistics Department (DGAL) at Elior is committed to a process of continuous improvement. At the end of January 2011, it was awarded ISO 14001 certification to better cope with environmental challenges.
Being exemplary
The General Purchasing and Logistics Director initiated the Project in 2010: ISO 14001 certification proposes a systematic approach to change and improvement. The approach is particularly devoted to the environmental dimension of the organization. AFAQ (Association française pour l’amélioration et le management de qualité, the French quality improvement and management entity) was in charge of evaluating the steps undertaken. Between 17 and 21 January 2010, the certification organization carried out an audit on the Department referring to the environmental impact of its activities concerning operation. It also checked the conformity of the service with environmental regulations (compliance with labour code, environment code, public health code, etc.).
To win this certification, DGAL implemented a dynamic environmental policy, in particular with:
• the setting up of indicators to monitor resource consumption (water, paper, electricity),
• the training of 85 co-workers in eco-responsible gestures,
• a series of confirmed actions including the recovery of ink cartridges, the use of a courier on a 100% electric 2 wheeler or the use of eco-labelled detergent products in a test kitchen,
• the release of an in-house newsletter to report on the certification approach and list the actions already undertaken.
Thanks to the mobilization of all the DGAL teams, behavioural change is moving in the right direction: Co-workers now bring in their own mugs, control their paper consumption and to turn off their computers!
Going even further
In parallel to this certification, DGAL is maintaining a responsible purchasing policy. In addition to specific buyer training, a Sustainable Development Committee is in charge of progress on
5 priority sites to:
• put privilege on proximity procurement,
• measured the impact of the transport of goods from warehouse 2 restaurants on the environment,
• reduce packaging waste,
• define environmental and social prerequisites to select suppliers in the most responsible way possible,
• set up a database combining all the DGAL actions in this field.
All the General Purchasing and Logistics Department (DGAL) teams are intensely committed to this approach, determined to carry their activities through and contribute into the preservation of natural resources.
