Q: Can you tell us in a few words what the “Children for the Environment” project is about?
A: It’s a project that the WWF (World Wildlife Fund)* has been running for nine years now. Its aim is to educate children about environmental issues with the help of specific themes. This year the theme is about food and nutrition. About 25,000 workbooks are sent to primary school teachers, who can use them as teaching resources throughout the year. A competition has also been organised. Classes have to plan menus for the three daily meals in springtime, which both respect the environment and are well balanced. On June 5, World Environment Day, 30 classes will receive prizes – vegetable growing kits. One class, the overall winner, will win a week of discovery classes.
Q: What led the WWF and Elior to collaborate?
A: It was a very natural progression. Elior was already in contact with the WWF. We played a consultancy role in the construction of the kitchen at Longchamp, their future headquarters along with the Nicolas Hulot Foundation. Elior’s expertise in the field is recognised by NGOs and environmental protection associations.
Q: What message do you hope this project will send out?
A: This project confirms Elior’s engagement to be a ‘responsible caterer.’ This is at the heart of our current activity, especially since we serve 795,000 school lunches every day in France. Above all, we want to take part in the global effort to educate children and those around them about the importance of eating well whilst respecting the environment.
Come back in a few months to find out how the project is doing!
